Pharmacology in the Blake's 7 Universe, or
a visit to Space City
BLAKE: So. That is Space City.
VILA: Also known as the satellite of sin.
AVON: By whom?
VILA: Me.
AVON: It had to be someone of limited imagination.
VILA: Pick a pleasure, any pleasure.
JENNA: And you'll find it for sale in Space City.
BLAKE: If you've got the money.
VILA: But we have, we have.
GAN: And if you can stomach doing business with the Terra Nostra.
- Adrenalin
- Vila's favorite concoction, 1/3 Adrenalin and 2/3 Soma, was first made by Cally in "Horizon." The exact effects of this drug were never described.
ExobriddanHighly addictive. Nothing more is known. Dayna pretends to be an addict in "Gold."- Pataki
- by inference, an aphrodisiac. Krantor of Freedom City describes it: "...a pataki cake...They contain the distilled venom of a local reptile, and the effects are highly
- stimulating." ("Gambit")
- Pylene 50
- The primary ingredient in Commissioner Sleet's Pacification Program, first mentioned in "Traitor." Invented by Forbus. Quotes are from "Traitor."
Characteristics:
FORBUS: Pylene-50, used homeopathically, is simply a muscle relaxant. Sleer discovered that a hundred times normal dosage totally subverts the will....
and
DAYNA: So Pylene-50 is actually made here [Helotrix]?
LEITZ: It has to be. It only remains stable for a few days, and then the enzyme bonds break up and it's no longer effective.
On Helotrix, the drug was administered via medical laser. Forbus had manufactured some pills that blocked the effects of the drug, which Tarrant gave to the Helot rebels. Later, in "Warlord," the concentration of the drug was stepped up (see Zondar, for example) and combined with subliminal messages, resulting in a completely obedient populace. The Betafarlian warlord Zukan claimed to have the manufacturing capability for an antitoxin (possibly extrapolated from Forbus's notes) which, like Pylene 50, degenerated quickly. Due to Zukan's betrayal of the alliance, the effectiveness/existence of the antitoxin was not demonstrated.
- "Relaxants"
- are mentioned in several episodes. This is possibly a general term.
- Shadow
- a highly addictive drug whose inevitable result was death. Its source was Alpha 7/5, or the Moon Disc, an ovoid, translucent plant which had partial telepathy, and could move on its own. ("Shadow")
- Soma
- apparently a relaxant of some sort. See "adrenalin."
- tincture of pyrellic
- used by Servalan/Sleer on Forbus in "Traitor." This poison caused pain, crippled, and apparently damaged the eyes before it killed. Made "from an extract of papperalian fungi."
- Miscellaneous
- In "Voice from the Past," Avon says that convicted offenders were hypnotized for memory revision, using "a combination of drugs and one of these trigger signals." The drugs are not specified.
- Vapour
- In "The Keeper," Tara inhales "the vapour" in order to see the future. Other unspecified drugs are mentioned by Gola: "My sister here has all kinds of mind-bending potions if they are more to your liking." Gola is seen smoking from a hookah, but the contents are not specified.
