Title: Raptor Red
Copyright: 1995
Type: Historical fiction
Submitted by: Karnalis
Description: "A pair of fierce but beautiful eyes look out from the undergrowth of conifers. She is an intelligent killer..." So begins one of the most extraordinary novels you will ever read. The time is 120 million years ago, the place is the plains of prehistoric Utah, and the eyes belong to an unforgettable heroine. Her name is Raptor Red, and she is a female Utahraptor dinosaur. Painting a rich and colorful picture of a lush prehistoric world, leading paleontologist Robert T. Bakker tells his story from within Raptor Red's extraordinary mind, dramatizing his revolutionary theories in this exciting tale. From a tragic loss to the fierce struggle for survival to a daring migration to the Pacific Ocean to escape a deadly new predator, Raptor Red combines fact and fiction to capture for the first time the thoughts, emotions, and behaviors of the most magnificent and enigmatic creatures ever to walk the face of the Earth. I highly recommend this book!

Title: The Last Unicorn
Copyright: 1968
Type: Fantasy
Submitted by: Faelenx
Description: The story follows the Unicorn, who leaves her enchanted forest to find out what happened to all the other unicorns. Her quest is joined by an apparently incompetent wizard and a scullery maid. Together they travel to the castle of King Haggard, believing that he and his Red Bull have imprisoned all the other unicorns. Before they arrive, the Red Bull appears and begins to chase the Unicorn. The magician saves her by turning her into a human. They call her Lady Amalthea, but King Haggard recognizes her for what she truly is once they gain entrance to the castle. The king's son, Prince Lir, falls in love with Amalthea and devotes himself entirely to trying to win her love. The rest of the novel follows the magician and the maid's efforts to find the lost unicorns before Amalthea loses her memory of being a unicorn and becomes entirely human. An excellent read and not at all the children's book that some seem to write it off as! An animated movie was also based on this story and I can vouch for it being excellent as well!

Title: Song of the Beast
Copyright: 2003
Type: Fantasy
Submitted by: Karnalis
Description: An excellent novel about a musician who has a deep and mysterious connection with dragons. The story starts out not having very much to do with dragons, but more with the musician, Aidan, trying to get his life back together after having been imprisoned for 17 years, for reasons unknown to him. After he is set free, Aidan MacAllister, with broken fingers and a broken heart, needs to find out why he was imprisoned in the worst dungeon in the world. Though he doesn't know quite why, he is helped by various people along his path, especially individuals of the mysterious Elhim race. Later, the story very subtley switches to a desperate fight to free the world's dragons from their own unjust imprisonment, but it's never quite that simple. A very good book, which touched me deeply (as both a musician and a dragon).

Title: Dragons: The Modern Infestation
Copyright: 1980
Type: Sci-fi/Fantasy
Submitted by: Karnalis
Description: Dragons are a staple of Western culture, familiar through bestiaries, folklore, and the framework of meaning provided by the church. Dragons of the Modern Infestation, however, must be known through a scientific term: verminology. The purpose of this monograph is to make available to the general public the fruits of verminological research which began shortly after the first modern sightings, in the hope of fostering a better understanding of the risks inherent in dragon/human contact, and a deeper appreciation of the beauty and complexity of these beasts. The book introduces their basic anatomy, habits, recreation, preferences in food, and their legendary lust for treasure; it covers their mating rituals and their care for their young, and, importantly, the mime, the means by which the dragons pursue their prey and invade even the most densely populated cities. Dragon language is discussed, as well as the controversial possibility of dragon/human communication.

Title: Jhereg
Copyright: 1983
Type: Fantasy
Submitted by: Karnalis
Description: There are many ways for a young man with quick wits and a quick sword to advance in the world. Vlad Taltos chose the route of the assassin. To his other qualifications he added two things; the first was a smattering of witchcraft- badly thought of on Dragaera, but only a fool refuses such a weapon... The second was his constant companion, a young jhereg, its leathery wings and venomous teeth always at Vlad's command; its alien mind psionically linked with his own. Vlad has never regretted the sorcerous bargain he made with his jhereg's mother: "I offer you egg long life and fresh, red meat without struggle, and I offer it my freindship. I ask for aid in my endeavors. I ask for its wisdom, and I ask for its friendship." The first in a chronologically skewed series of nine books, about magic, edged weaponry, and a wise-cracking jhereg on a professional killer's shoulder. Good, clean fun!

Title: Fire in the Turtle House
Copyright: 2001
Type: Non-Fiction
Submitted by: Karnalis
Description: The sea turtle has existed since the time of the dinosaurs. Considered sacred by many cultures, it is also universally considered one of the most fascinating and beautiful animals in the sea. But now, suddenly, the sea turtle is dying, ravaged by a mysterious and gruesome plague that some biologists consider the most serious epidemic now raging in the natural world. The disease is called fibropapillomatosis, or FP. It has been found in turtles from every ocean basin in the world. In some places, more than 90 percent of turtles are affected. And somewhere along the line, the disease has jumped species. Until recently, FP had been seen only in green sea turtles. Now it has been reported in six of the seven remaining sea turtle species. Most important, the victims of FP belong to a group whose existence is already threatened. For creatures that have existed for more than a hundred million years, extinction, that black hole of evolution, is a real possibility. What is happening to the sea turtle, and how can it be stopped? In this compelling scientific detective story, Osha Gray Davidson tracks the fervent efforts of the extraordinary scientists, marine biologists, veterinarians, and others racing against the clock to unravel a complicated biological and environmental puzzle and keep the turtles from extinction. He follows the fates of particular turtles, revealing their surprisingly distinct personalities and why they inspire an almost spiritual devotion in the humans who come to know them. Travelling across the world, Davidson also traces the story of the sea turtle - and of our relationship to the sea - through history. Vivid tales all shed light on the genesis of FP while illuminating the role humans play in marine mass mortalities and extinctions. This is a beautifully written, intellectually provocative, and ultimately terrifying book about a group of animals that this dragon holds very dear to his heart.

To make matters worse, Angie had been taken prisoner by an evil dragon and was held captive in the impenetrable Loathly Tower. So in this land where georges were edible and beasts were magical- where spells worked and logic didn't - Jim Eckert had a problem. And he needed help, by george! Somehow, the alien device is snatching people and- for unknown reasons- transporting them into worlds of mythology. Dr. Lukacs is one of the victims. Granted, he's and expert on mythology, but myths are not something he'd thought to encounter personally...or wanted to. Sure, he has a couple of tough paratroopers along with him, as well as a blonde Amazon biologist. Unfortunately, modern weapons don't work, and the Greek gods are out to kill the heroes. Well, yes, they've got Medea, Arachne, and the Sphinxes on their side and at least SOME of the Egyptian gods seem friendly, but that can be a very mixed blessing, to say the least. Description: Buttercup, a farm girl in the kingdom of Florin, wasn't the world's most beautiful woman at age fifteen, nor even the third most beautiful nor the sixth. In point of fact, she was barely in the top twenty, and that based on potential, for she hated fussing over her looks. What she liked to do was to ride her horse, and taunt the farm boy. The horse came when she called it and went where she steered it. Yet the farm boy, Westley- a young man, actually - was even more obedient. No matter what she demanded, he always answered simply, "As you wish." At least, that's what she thought. He was really saying "I love you," but it wasn't until she'd turned seventeen that Buttercup heard him right. The very day Buttercup declared her heart, Westley left for America, promising to send for her when he'd made his fortune. After hearing that the Dread Pirate Roberts (known for leaving no survivors) had attacked Westley's ship Buttercup died. Her body remained in excellent working order and she moved up the ranks of the world's great beauties to #1, but her life lost all meaning. And so she agreed to marry Prince Humperdinck who considered Buttercup's beauty a tribute to his own perfection. Besides which, he knew it would impress the people of Florin, who'd demand vengeance when she was killed by a foreign assassin- as Humperdinck had arranged. For her murder was to be the first step in his plan to making himself the most powerful king in all of Florinese history. So! Are you ready for fencing and fighting? True love, strong hate, and harsh revenge? A giant, lots of bad men, lots of good men, plus Rodents Of Unusual Size? Not to mention death, lies, truth, and miracles? It's all here!

Title: Dragonhenge
Copyright: 2002
Type: Fantasy/Art
Submitted by: Karnalis
Description: Countless millions of years before the emergence of humankind, the great dragon civilization dominated this world. Not a civilization of artifacts and edifices, it left few traces behind it save legends and one mighty structure, built as a monument in the final days to the glory of a culture that knew its time was done: Dragonhenge. The dragons were profound storytellers, and collected here are tales from their oral mythology - tales of the origins of all things, from the birth of the Universe as the breath of the primordial dragon-god Qinmeartha, to the gifting of color to creation by the heroine Syor. Also here are legends of great doings, among them the battle to stop the malevolent ice dragons in their war of conquest. Told through a fusion of magnificent art and singing prose, these tales are by turns deeply affecting and poignantly observant of foibles we may recognize in ourselves. A unique collaboration, born from the interplay of ideas between two multiple award-winning creators, Dragonhenge is a feast of visual and lyrical splendor.

Description: In Johnnie Rico's world, a few centuries from now, anyone may join the military, if he or she really wants to. Service is entirely voluntary. In fact, it's discouraged. Of course, there's a catch. If folks don't sign up, they forfeit full citizenship, which in turn means they can't vote. Basic training is so harsh that only those of the highest character will survive. Make the sacrifice and you become eligible to vote. It's as simple as that. For Johnnie Rico, who signed up on a whim soon after his 18th birthday, it WAS as simple as that. He just never figured he'd wind up a soldier in the Mobile Infantry- the service with the highest casualty rate- where he's told, "We'll make a man of you - or kill you trying." To Johnnie's surprise, he gets through the toughest boot camp in the Universe...only to be sent into battle against mankind's most terrifying enemy. A sci-fi classic, and it's MUCH better than the movie. I know that it's cliche to say the book is better than the movie, but I'm serious here.

Description: The end of the twentieth century draws near and with it comes a reckoning. Rapid population growth and industrial development have had a devastating impact on the natural world. In a few years, many of the animal kingdom's most extraordinary creatures, including the magnificent wild tiger will be hounded and hunted out of their natural habitats, never to roam free again. We have entered the age of extinction. It was an awareness of this unfolding tragedy that naturalist and safari-tour leader Richard Ives embarked on a remarkable journey through India, Nepal, and Southeast Asia in search of the vanishing wild tiger. What ensued was a quest that would bring him face-to-face with the contest for survival between man and animal. In the great tradition of the best travel writing, offering breathtaking glimpses of the tiger in all its savage beauty, Of Tigers and Men is more than a real-life adventure story. It is one of the rare ond unforgettable books whose passion and honesty can make us change the way we look at the world. A very powerful book, which I highly recommend.

Description: The magnificent second novel from the legendary author of "One Flew Over the Cuckoo's Nest" and "Sailor Song" is a wild-spirited and hugely powerful tale of an Oregon logging clan. A bitter strike is raging in a small lumber town on the Oregon coast. Bucking that strike out of sheer cussedness are the Stampers: Hank, the son who has spent his life trying to live up to his father; and Viv, who fell in love with Hank's exuberant machismo but now finds it wearing thin. And then there is Leland, Henry's bookish younger son, who returns to his family on a mission of vengeance - and finds himself fulfilling it in ways he never imagined. Out of the Stamper family's rivalries and betrayals, Ken Kesey has crafted a novel with the mythic impact of Greek tragedy.

It is the story of While not a story of dragons or the lore, this is an excellent read for those who enjoy tales of knighthood and honor. It is the story ofCucuhulain, an Irish legend from around the time of Christ. Many Celtic legends are based upon the exploits and travels of Cullen's Hound, and Llewellyn does a wonderful job of capturing the Celtic culture in this book. It is a must-read for any fantasy reader, and one of my all-time favorites- right up there with The Chronicles of Thomas Covenant and the Dragon Riders of Pern.

Amidst the devastation they create, two sworn enemies each set out to find the legendary weapon to end the unholy alliance. Description: Here we have the classic struggle of good vs. evil, but with a twist. The fight through this series of books is between Chaos and Order. Chaos uses the guise of goodly acts to cover its spread, and Order uses the ideas of pureness and true strengthening to perform deeds. Chaos is easy and Order is hard, but Chaos comes with the price of shortening the life of the mage who uses its power. As a result, those who use order are able to exist longer, though with less power. These books do not (in general) follow the path of one character, but span generations and show the continuing knowledge and ideas that are cultivated and interpeted through hundreds of years. The books follow familiar thoughts or ideas, with the characters and settings being different. Definitely worth reading.

Type: Non-Fiction/Nature
Submitted by: Karnalis
Description: Hordes of bloodthirsty wolves are slaughtering the arctic caribou, and the government's Wildlife Service assigns naturalist Farely Mowat to investigate. Mowat is dropped alone onto the frozen tundra, where he begins his mission to live among the howling wolf packs and study their waves. Contact with his quarry comes quickly, and Mowat discovers not a den of marauding killers but a courageous family of skillful providers and devoted protectors of their young. As Mowat comes closer to the wolf world, he comes to fear with them an onslaught of bounty hunters and government exterminators out to erase the noble wolf community from the Arctic. Never Cry Wolf is one of the brilliant narratives on the myth and magical world of wild wolves and man's true place among the creatures of nature. "We have doomed the wolf not for what it is, but for what we deliberately and mistakenly perceive it to be - the mythological epitome of a savage, ruthless killer - which is, in reality, no more than the reflected image of ourself."

Type: Real-life fiction

Description: High school freshman Cameron Wright finds that duck egg blue is the perfect color for the river in a small-scale model of the Grand Canyon he's building for a science-class project. It is this project that his ultrareligious father criticizes as being contrary to the creation story. Cameron isn't the only one in his Arizona community to come under attack from the religious right. Cameron's science teacher, Mark Edwards, his mother's new boyfriend, is being pressured at school to give "creation science" equal time with evolution in the classroom, a directive that threatens both his position at the school and the separation of church and state. And Mr. Edwards is shocked to discover who's pulling the strings behind the Darwin vs. Bible debate. As the school year unfolds, Mr. Edwards and Cameron embark on a search for self, for right answers, and for ultimate meanings. In the end, this teacher and his student learn some very important lessons about values, courage, and integrity. An entertaining, touching, and thought-provoking book, it adds a rational voice to the church/state issue and evolution/creation-science controversies wracking our nation. It's a marvelous book that shows how logic and common sense can prevail against blind rhetoric and close-mindedness.

Type: Non-Fiction

Description: In the past, scientists have refused to acknowledge that animals have anything like human intelligence. But a growing body of research reveals otherwise. We've discovered ants that use leaves as tools to cross bodies of water, woodpecker finches that hold twigs in their beaks to dig for grubs, and bonobo chimps that can use sticks to knock down fruit or pole-vault over water. Not only do animals use tools, but some display an ability to learn and problem-solve, as well. Based on the latest scientific and anecdotal evidence culled from animal experts in the field and in the labs, Inside the Animal Mind is an engrossing look at animal intelligence, cognitive ability, problem solving, and emotion. George Page, originator and host of the long-running PBS series "Nature," offers us an informed, entertaining, and humanistic investigation of the minds of predators and scavengers, birds and primates, rodents, and other species. Inside the Animal Mind is a fascinating narrative explaining the nature and depth of animal intelligence.
